The Princess Bride is a near-perfect fantasy/adventure/comedy, and one of the best films that the 1980's have to offer. Based on a hilarious book by S. Morgenstern and scripted by William Goldman, Rob Reiner showcased a deft touch for directing material which required just the right tone to work. The casting made the film, IMHO. Cary Elwes was a dashing Wesley, Robin Wright a beautiful Buttercup, Andre the Giant was born to play Fezzick. And that's not even mentioning the great cameo by Billy Crystal.
By following the spirit of the superb source material, The Princess Bride proved a winner. 10 out of 10.

Bar none, the best movie of any genre I've ever seen. Indeed, this movie has no "genre" per se. Elements of romance, adventure, action and comedy are seamlessly woven together to create this masterpiece. Mandy Patinkin and Billy Crystal give the performances of their careers. The rest of the ensemble cast turn in great performances as well.

This movie is considered to be the "Wizard of Oz" of my generation, in that it was not received well when it first opened. I attribute this in part to the lack of a distinct genre category (which in this case is a *strength* of the movie) and in part to the title, which is an unfortunate side-effect of writer William Goldman's initial inspiration on the project. If you are put off by the title, get over it. You will love this movie, and like the rest of us you'll find yourself quoting it frequently in conversation.
